RACE 101 SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT AMANDA FERGUSON SCORES HER FIRST WIN ON DIRT AT OCALA! April 9, 2010 - Earlier last evening, Amanda raced her way to her first win on dirt at Ocala Speedway. There was a field of 19 cars for the second Top Gun Sprint Series race of the season. It was their first of three scheduled race...s at Ocala Speedway. Amanda started 5th in the first heat race. She managed to hang on to a third place finish despite having no brakes during the race. After the heat, Amanda did not want any changes to the set-up. Her only request was that the team try to get her some brakes for the feature. Amanda lined up in the second position for the feature with Tim George on the pole. The first start did not complete a lap as a car spun bringing out the caution. On the second restart, Amanda managed to slip by Tim, after some minor contact, and take the lead only to find the caution flying once again. This time Amanda lined up first for a single file start and she never looked back. Despite several cautions, no other car was able to challenge her for the lead. After the race Tim told her that on the second restart he noticed her left rear shock mount had broken and the shock was flopping around. Despite not having a shock on the left rear Amanda said the car was handling great and she knew she just needed to run a smooth and consistent race if she wanted to stay in the lead. Look for Amanda Saturday night at Punta Gorda in the KJ Motorsports #20.

I raced my 3rd late model race yesterday evening at New Smyrna Speedway.  I lined up for the start on the outside pole.  As the field took the green the #9 of Rich Clouser closed in on the #20 of Anthony Sergi leaving me stuck on the outside.  Unable to take the lead, I settled into 3rd place.  After two cautions and some damage to the right front fender I found myself running in third place behind the 9Z of Zack Donatti.  With 11 laps to go I made a move to pass Zack.  After some contact in the corner Zack spun out bringing out the third caution.  Both Zack and I were sent to the rear to restart the race.  When the green flag fell I went to work trying to pass Zack.  I was able to get under him coming out of the corner but was unable to complete the pass.  I finished the race in 5th place.  When asked how I felt about the evening I replied, "It was another good learning experience.  My shifting is getting better and I am picking up the throttle earlier in the corner.  Doug and Kenny did a great job setting up the car and Chad was an awesome spotter.  I am looking forward to next Friday's race at Speedworld."  Thanks to the team for all their hardwork and especially the fans for supporting me.  My next late model race is Friday, September 24th at Orlando Speedworld.  I'll be back in the KJ Motorsports #20 sprint car on October 16th at Punta Gorda Speedway

About:

My racing career began when I was just seven years old. It started with a trip to the local quarter midget track in the summer of 2000. After watching the races I was hooked. My parents bought me a car and signed me up for novice training. This began seven years of quarter midget racing. During this time I won three track championships, 4 regional championships, and set several track records. In 2007, at the age of 13, I moved into mini sprints and from there I moved into a full size sprint car in mid 2008. Racing has always been a family endeavor with both my parents by my side. While racing has always been my priority, my mother felt that I needed to experience other sports as well. In addition to racing I was a competitive gymnast for 5 years and a competitive cheerleader for 2 years. I gave up both of these sports when they began to conflict with racing. I still compete in high school sports that do not conflict with my racing, the school dive team and the Varsity Cheerleading squad. I am an honor student and ranked in the top five percent of my class. I visit local elementary schools with my sprint car to talk about vehicle safety and careers in motorsports. I am also on the list of call in volunteers at the Florida Special Olympic Headquarters in Clermont, FL. My family does not have a background in racing. I am the first person to pursue a career in racing. I feel that I have the best parents in the world because of all the sacrifices they have made over the years to help me continue racing. My father is a mechanic and my mother is an elementary school teacher. My goal in racing is to become a professional race car driver competing with the best drivers in the sport. I am willing to work hard and I feel that I have what it takes to be successful.

Racing Goals:
My plan for next year (2010) is to continue racing my sprint car on dirt and asphalt. In addition, I have been talking to 2 teams that may have an opening to drive a pro truck and an open wheel modified (both on asphalt) part time. By 2011 I plan to be racing a full body body stock car full time either in the ASA Late Model class or some other NASCAR sanctioned class. In 2012 I hope to participate in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Program and possible land a deal with a team at that time.
